The tube preamp section of the Ampeg SVT-3PRO Series Head re-creates the great bass tone that made the original SVT the most respected bass amp of all time. The power section is solid state with a toroidal transformer that generates less noise and magnetic interference. Delivers 450W @ 4 ohms and has an arsenal of tone-shaping tools: 3 bands of tone, a 5-position mid selector, 9-band graphic EQ, plus low and high boosts. Other pro features include input peak LED, input pad and bright switch, mute function, tuner out, variable line-out level, time-delayed turn on, DC-supplied filaments, and variable fan speed. 2U rackmount.

Top of the line mid-powered amp

This amp is amazing for bass, keys, electric cello, even guitar! Amazing REAL TUBES give you the closest you can get to get to decent tone with a solid-state powered amp. The only issue is of course that the power is just not quite on the pro level. If you can even find a 4 ohm bass cab you will most likely still have to use the -15db pad, cutting your volume in half.

I just sold this amp after 3 great years of use. The one complaint I have is that the owner's manual is terrible. Once I learned, but starting a thread on talkbass, about this amp then I was fine. It has many great features. Mine was a 1996 USA model and it worked great. It is heavy, about 25 lbs, which is the territory with tubes. Ultimately I decided the tubes weren't worth back surgery. One of the few amps that I might actually miss, having owned Peavey, GK and Hartke prior.

450 watts into 4 ohms?
Posted by Twister from Canada on Aug 29, 2009

I love the way this head sounded, full fat and textured beyond belief. It has all the features I like and would want on an amp. However their is no way this thing puts out 450 watts into a 4 ohm load? I have to run the master at 10 and control my volume with the input level. However even that's a task as the thing is always flashing indicating that it is being overloaded. How is this possible when it's at 4 or 5? It dosen't matter whether I use my active or passive basses, the result is the same. My friends GK400rb is as loud and it's rated at 280 watts into a 4 ohm load. Again the tone rocks, but 450, not a chance?

Being made overseas is a big turn off as well. I can't recommend this amp for these reasons. Quality is a concern and the volume just isn't there?

the best out there

I traded an Eden WT550 Traveler for this and I am glad I did. The Eden was OK but had a very dry sound to it is the best way to describe it. The SVT3 Pro in contrast has the warm full sound I could not get with the Eden. The sound is so warm and full that it almost sounds like it has a touch of tube reverb built in. I also own an SVT Classic snd this sounds as good and it weighs 1/3 as much. I could not be happier. The only thing is I wish it was made in the USA rather than Korea.
