I am the type person I like to research my purchase before I fork over the cash. Well I finally forked over the cash and can honestly say this little beast is the best sounding amp I have ever had. I have owned swr peavey carvin and this sounds better and has allowed me to regain my enthusiam for playing again. Some say this little monster is not loud enuff, I say if it aint loud enuff you aint playin music you making noise. I play music that is designed to be listened to attentively not force feed to you. I love this amp

Many years ago, 1978, I bought a beautiful V-4B with an SVT cab. This was a time when all guitar players were using Marshall or Hiwatt with at least a 4x12, sometimes 2 of them. I had the BEST bass tone ever, always plenty loud and punchy. Then came the era when you had to have a power amp, preamp and all those 3 ways speaker cabs, so I sold my Ampeg rig...never been happy with any of the hybrids heads since, so now I'm looking for tube bass amp again. I tried the V-4BH and I was very dissapointed. First, it feels cheap, the are using different transfo, even the tubes are changed..the amp weight about 20lbs lighter. So I went out an bought the SVT-VR and this is the Ampeg sound , everything is there, even the rocker switchs!! I would have love to buy the V-4BH, but it wasn't even close to the original one for me...The SVT-VR is by far the best amp Ampeg produced in a long long time. Buy it.

This amp is absolutely amazing. It is a pretty loud 100 watt amp and great tone for the money. The gain knob is very handy. The key is the preamp tubes. They are the same as the SVT. I wish they could replace the 4 6l6's with 2 6550's or KT 88's to further enhance the SVT sound. People have been compaining about volume with this amp. When you are playing live, the idea is not to have insane stage volume, but to actually hear your bandmates so you can figure out what is going on on stage, especially in an inmprov environment, so you can have a good show. If you want loud, then get a good PA and mike your stuff, then get a power amp to further power your system. 100 tube watts is plenty loud for anything except at extremely large venues. I use it with a 4x10+1x15 and it is quite loud (almost overpowering at some times). it is a bit expensive, but it is money well spent.

I was thinking that maybe I should stop by here and submit a poor review for the Ampeg V4BH... You know, that way everyone and their brother wouldn't start showing up on stages with the same incredibly sounding, warm bass head that I have! Yeah, this amp is a bit pricey, but SOOO worth the money. If 100 watts is not enough for you, you're either deaf or don't understand Bal. Outs and stage monitors. This amp is every bit as loud as my other Ampeg B2R (300 solid state). And since it's 100 watts, you can step on the gain, get a nice tube coloratiion in your tone, and control the volume with the master. You would have to play so frigging loud to do that with the 300-watt head. I'm in 5-piece band, competing with sometimes 3 other guitars, and this Ampeg retains its clarity and definition way better than I expected.
