Inexpensive, not Cheap

I bought this bass because it was cheap. Also, with a full on electric, I would go crazy with the volume and get kicked out of the house. I had some fret buzz issues but got most of them solved. This is a good starter bass for those on a budget, but I wish I saved up longer and got an electric bass.

...if you are wanting to plug this bass into an amp/sound system. The electronics don't pick up any highs at all. I bought it to have the best of both worlds, but with the bargain basement price I should have known better. Great acoustic bass, stayed in tune, sounded good, nice tone, but without being able to plug it in, it was worthless to me. Hopefully this review saves someone from making the same mistake I did. If you want just an acoustic bass, the price is still right, so go for it! Just don't worry about plugging a cord into it.

Review in Retrospect

I waited a full year before commenting on this bass after buying, so that I could write a review from endurance. It's really a quite loud bass with an easy playing fretboard. As a whole it is able for quick travel, the only necessary adjustments being new strings and neck adjustment (allen wrench of course included). It's not perhaps a bass to record but to practice or improvise. Thus, the greatest attribute is its value.

Not bad for the bucks

The first one arrived with a broken neck, it was returned and replaced with one in one piece. I couldn't get rid of the string buzz with any amount of neck adjustment, so took it to my favorite luthier and he had it working with some nut and bridge adjustments. I bought a small 10 watt practice am to go with it. After the bridge and nut tweaking, rough fret edge filing, and some new D'Addario strings, I ended up with a really decent instrument... well built, sturdy, and good tone quality. The passive electronics aren't much to write home about, but for the price, it can't be beat. Be prepared to probably do some serious setup work on this instrument, but after you do, you'll have a good playing bargain electric-acoustic bass.

I spent many years on the road as an upright/electric bassist playing in many bands and music from Merle Haggard to John Coltrane. I am retired now but wanted a bass to play part time. I was pleasantly surprised at this bass! It stays in tune very well and has nice tone. It cries out for flat wound strings to maximize the acoustic aspect!! I prefer passive electronics so very satisfied with the system on this bass. I have owned many expensive basses like Ricks, Fenders, Gibsons and Hofners but this inexpensive nice bass and I will be friends for life!!
