Essential bass overdrive

The ValveDrive is the bass overdrive I've been searching for. The sound of an overdriven 12AX7 can't be matched. It's now an essential part of my sound and I rarely turn it off. This pedal acts just like an overdriven tube pre-amp found in better tube guitar amps (think Marshall). It's like my classic 70's SVT has a second overdrive channel. Again, think of the SVT if it had the sweet break-up and gain of the Marshall JCM 800. The ValveDrive gives a great push, heft, and focused/tight break-up and works with the strengths of my amp. Both pedal modes work well (and you effectively have 3 bass "channels" with this pedal), but the "Modern" mode really shines with sharp, chunky, and warm boost (this is my standard sound). This pedal's EQ is also really effective; and I love the fact you can set the EQ to a flat setting, which makes this pedal even more transparent. You can go from mild push to pretty thick distortion, but nothing like fuzz or over the top Big Muff-like sustain. If you want really over-the-top fuzz or distortion go with the Bass Big Muff Pi on top of the ValveDrive like I do; a truly awesome combo. I love this pedal and can't image my bass rig without it!

This pedal/pre-amp is a permanent part of my set-up and I've never used a better bass overdrive in my 20 years plus of playing. This pedal gives you a real tube gain and it's like having an extra overdrive channel for your bass amp. It sounds wonderful because the pedal functions as a pre-amp and only a tube can give you natural, organic, and musical break-up. The other sweet feature is that both overdrive modes sound really good and are consistent. This gives you two overdrives in one song, etc. I have a 70's SVT and the ValveDrive gives my tone wonderful grit, push, and definition. This is not a fuzz pedal, so add the Bass Big Muff Pi and you're completely set: bass distortion heaven.

I've tried many preamp/overdrive pedals, and was never fully satisfied. This pedal is a monster, true tube tone, and very natural sounding. My only negative is that it does add noise. Not a lot of noise, but enough to be noticed. During full blown rock band enviroments, it's lost in the mix, but at home, it's bothersome. Aside from that, I couldn't recommend a preamp/overdrive any higher than this one. It brings my Rickenbacker/ Ampeg to life, and that's saying something.
