Don't fret it will be alright

I have been gigging with this bass for about 6 months now and besides a broken string last Friday night (it happens) it has been great. The neck is not super fast and it is a bit bulky for smaller hands, but it still plays really well. This J bass is by no means a one trick pony; you can dial in pretty much any sound that you want right from the preamp. Since I am currently playing in a cover band those “on the fly” adjustments are often necessary. I think the price is a bit high and it seems to keep rising, but as with most instruments, you get what you pay for. I mean it is an American Fender J bass it is not going to loose value as long as you don’t use it for a boat oar. Also I initially thought that it being a 5 string and 34 inch scale may be a problem with tension on the B. I thought that the shorter scale length would cause the B to be floppy and no one wants that. As it turns out it plays fine the B is plenty punchy and not muddy at all. I am glad that the good people at Fender are smarter than I am. The only real issue that I have with it is that the “highly detailed nut and fret work” is not that detailed. The nut is fine, but the frets are sharp at the bottoms and painful on longer slides. I am taking it my luthier today so that we can get those fret issues worked out. Overall this bass is a highly playable work horse and you can’t go wrong with a Fender. If you have the scratch go for it man.

GREAT BASS!

This is a great bass. I have owned this bass for 4 years. I was a full time touring musician when I bought this bass. When I stopped touring, I sold everything EXCEPT this bass and my Super Redhead. I have played/owned many basses, but for the money, none of them can touch this. It has been an absolute work horse. I will never get rid of her!

This bass is the best in terms of tonality and playability. It is a little rough for slap or fingerstyle, but it delivers the best tone and has the best feel of any bass I have played.

I love this guitar

I love this guitar.I've been playing 40 years, and I like this bass better than anything else I've ever played. Mine is a little different than the one pictured. Mine has a maple fret board.I get a great tone and it plays like butter. So much of how a guitar plays is determind by how it's set up. Set it up right and this guitar will knock your socks off. Don't buy the latest fad guitar, get this one.

Solidly Good

Reviewer's Background: Three and a half years
Reviewer's Play Style: Jazz, Hendrix covers, improvised rock, funk
This bass is a very very good bass. It is versatile and with adjustments in the eq or playing styles it can do almost any type of music well. It has growly lows (great for Hendrix, Band of Gypsies, or Allman Brothers type stuff) clean mids and beautiful highs. It's just a solid all around good bass. With the active eq and jazz pickups you can get tons of different sounds. It's not amazingly good at anything in particular but it is good at everything. It has served me well for two and a half years with only minor truss rod adjustments. The only problem I have is that the low fifth string is floppy and doesn't have much power, but this is also because I tune it down 1/2 step.
