Fender gave this 5-string American Standard Series Jazz Bass a vintage body radius and contour for classic vibe and feel. The Jazz Bass V's body is rendered in premium ash or alder for optimum tone and sustain. Its rosewood or maple fretboard features detailed fret and nut work. The neck is graphite-reinforced and has rolled edges for a broken-in feel from the get-go. The HMV Bridge (high mass vintage) increases sustain, provides punchier tone, beefier plates and 3/8" diameter vintage saddles. String height adjustment screws have nylon patches for a tight fit that won't vibrate loose.

A 12-gauge cold rolled steel plate machined brass backstop increases the bass guitar's mass, enhances top end. Socket head intonation screws are engineered for a tighter fit and are now more stable. Features Fender special-design tuning keys. They work great, and are 30% lighter, minimizing neck dip. They offer the classic 20:1 tuning ratio, cast zinc with aluminum string posts and mounting nuts, steel clover keys, brass worm gears, and steel worm drives.

With a thinner undercoat, the American Standard J Bass body breathes easier and has improved sound thanks to the greater influence of the tonewoods. Neck pocket paint buildup has been reduced by 40%, greatly improving the wood to wood connection/reaction.

The included SKB rectangular design case, exclusive to Fender, has TSA-recognized and accepted locks, a fiberglass reinforced nylon trigger release latching system, indestructible cushioned rubber over-molded handle with flush lock out, injection-molded feet, and an exclusive arched stacking system.

I finally took the plunge and got a 5 string and I'm glad I went with Fender. I got this with the rebate so it is was a good deal too. The bass is flawless and the only thing I did was have the action lowered a bit. I think for the money this is the best 5 string available.

A Thing Of Beauty

I've been playing for twenty-five years and own two other 5-strings, a P-Bass, a 4-string fretted Jazz Bass and a 4-string fretless Jazz Bass.. The American Standard Jazz Bass V is by far the best bass I have ever played. Straight out of the box it was perfectly intonated and the action was excellent. The passive pickups produce that mid-range growl that is so characteristic of a good jazz bass. The finish is flawless and the satin on the back of the neck helps make an already fast neck nearly dangerous. The Modern C neck profile is thinner from back to front than I had expected and is pleasantly comfortable. The string spacing was wider that expected, but again it was not any bother at all. To top it all off is the Fender/SKB molded case. It's sturdy and impressive looking. It definitely inspires confidence that your bass won't be marred by careless band mates throwing it into the van at the end of the night. All that being said there is also included what all Fender fans grew to love about buying a new Fender, the case candy. You get the iconic black and yellow Fender logo strap, a truss rod wrench, a polishing cloth, an instrument cord and an owners manual in case you can't figure out how to use your new instrument.

All in all this is one of the finest basses in any price range and for the serious gigging musician is a perfect companion.

I have played and owned Fenders for over 30 years including Custom shop GTRs. Mine must have been built on a friday? The B string nut and bridge saddles just aren't right. All the pots/knobs were loose. The wiring on the cable 1/4in jack needed to be resoldered. !!!(I had Squires made better at 1/3 the price)!!! If you have smaller hands don't buy it it is a PLANK for a fretboard.

The Fender American Standard Jazz Bass V is one of the best instruments I've ever played-it's the only 5-string I've played that has a really good sounding B-string. The only problem I encountered was the strap buttons, which came completely off after a few weeks, but I put strap locks on so I haven't had a problem since. Overall it's the one of the best basses I've ever played and it's become my main since I got it.
