In designing this beautifully crafted, exotic wood J Bass, Fender incorporated a host of features guided by Victor Bailey himself. The sleek body has a koa top over rosewood and mahogany. Noiseless pickups add warmth and lows that complement the body's natural clarity and brightness. The circuitry has been tweaked with a pre-shape, boost, and EQ settings to enhance the unique sonic nature of the exotic woods. For maximum headroom, the tone circuit is powered by an 18-volt supply. Includes a Fender hardshell case.

It was in a lovely brown hard shell case that looked so nice I didn't want to scratch it. I opened the case and gasped at how nice it looked. It was lite compared to my other basses and the feel was excellent. The gold hardware was a nice touch and the wood was stunning! I plugged it in and noticed it sounded great even with the factory flatwound strings. I plan to have an epoxy coating applied by a pro on the fingerboard so i can use roundwound strings. This is by far the most beautiful bass I'll probably ever own.

The Closest thing to handmade that Fender makes

First of all, the bass is beautiful. A good piece of Koa is becoming rare. A word of warning; having seen several of these, each piece of wood looks different. There are some highly figured, grainy pieces of Koa, and others that aren't as spectacular. Still, the natural wood finish on this instrument is beautiful. The features are very nice - the 22 frets compared to Fender's standard 20 - the deluxe tuning machines - and don't let the purists (which I am one) fool you. There is a big advantage in the Active Electronics. The proof is in the pudding (sound). Maybe a little pricier than it needs to be, but it's the only Fender that really features the various woods...Koa, Rosewood, Mahogany and Maple. I Love It!

I haven't played the fretted model, but the fretless one looks and plays great. It has a rich, deep sound near the bottom that becomes crisp at the top. The active EQ pretty much lets you get any sound you want though. In general this is a really smooth and playable fretless.
