No frills bass amp

Happy to say I've had this little guy for about 4mos now as a rehearsal only amp. It has plenty of volume probably even for a small gig (if you have good electronics in your bass). The overdrive channel is pretty meaty - you should be able to thrash out if you want to. I was able to dial in some good slap/pop sounds as well as low bass for my Traben 5str Array Limited's B string. A few caveats - there's no effects loop. GK's not alone in this design flaw (IMO) but there's just some things the next batch of amp makers need to start doing - FX loops. Also, if you play in a room with a CFL light or a UPS style battery backup breaker thing, you might get some hum or buzz. Not sure if it's a shielding or grounding thing, but if I get the amp within 5ft of the UPS or plug on the same outlet as my CFL light, I get noise. Move the amp (not the bass) and it's OK. Go figure...

I played a lot in the 80s and my favorite rig was a GK400RB with an 18/2x10 cab. In the nineties, I wasn't playing as much so I sold the 400RB(mistake!) and cab. Recently I started playing again and went shopping for a small combo. I didn't even hesitate. It had to be a GK. Since I was mostly playing blues or backing singer/songwriters in small venues, the Backline 112 seemed perfect. The first thing I noticed when I got home was that the thing buzzed like crazy, even with nothing plugged in. My bandmates even commented about it. I took it back to the store and they exchanged it for another one. It still buzzed, but not as loud. I thought this was strange because my old 400RB didn't buzz at all when you turned it on. Anyway, I decided to live with it given the price. Well, at practice, during a break between songs the speaker started flopping and then the amp cut out. I took it home and turned it on, it worked fine. Then it happened again at practice. The red light would come on, the amp would cut out and I'd have to turn it off and on again. Of course, once it started happening, the intervals between failures got shorter and shorter. I took it back to the store and they sent it out to a certified GK repair center. They told me they found a cold solder joint. But after a few practices, guess what. It still does it. I sent it back again. They replaced the voltage regulator. Is this the end? Well, it's the last GK I'll buy. Phil Jones Bass and Acoustic Image are looking alot better now. Just because something is inexpensive doesn't mean it can be unreliable. Tell me it will be underpowered or won't have a lot of features, but don't tell me it's not going to work!

Good, but...

Good quality build and great sound. Not heaps of features but enough for me. Bit heavy to carry for its size. Mine had a buzzing sound in the speaker which got worse as you turned it up and was also carried through the line out into the PA and digital recorder. The shop said it was normal but it was no good for my recording needs. I got a refund and bought a Laney RB6. No problems.

So I had this amp for a couple of years, I think three now, and I recently completely blew it out. This amp is great for practice, but cannot handle playing over drums, guitar, and vocals. At least it didn't for me. As far as the tone and features on this amp, it is fantastic. The distortion sounds a better than any pedal I have played with, and the tone is excellent, like all GK products. This model just isn't as strong as I wanted. If you are looking for a good practice amp, thisis perfect. If you are playing in a band, you may need a little more power.

I have been playing with this amp the last four years and am very pleased. The contour is a nicely added feature. The distortion is descent. The tone is amazing for the cost. I like the tilt-back option of playing. I know now that G.K means quality, and durability.
