Although it shares the violin body shape and body woods, and pickups, the Deluxe is a distinct departure from the Vintage models with a one-piece European maple neck, ebony fretboard, gold-plated hardware, and diamond-shaped mother-of-pearl headstock inlays. A dark, full-body binding that contrasts with the lighter woods of the body is another of the details that sets the Deluxe apart. Responsive and light in weight, it is truly a pleasure to play.

I have had mine for several years and still enjoy playing it. We paly a lot of music from the sixties, so both the sound and the look fit our style. The light weight makes a four hour gig a lot easier as well. Whether you collect it or use it, it is a special instrument and generates a lot of conversatins with both fellow musicians and fans.

Hofner: Either love it or hate it

I have wanted one of these basses for years. I bought an Epiphone copy, which is nice but nothing comes close to the real thing. The Hofner is really a special instrument. Only the original German models have that distinct woody sound much like a full sized stand up bass. The neck is really smooth making it the easiest bass I have ever played. The quality and workmanship is unsurpassed, unfortunately so is the price. I bought mine just before the price went up nearly $800.00. That's a lot due to the weak US dollar. In a few years they will be out of reach of most musicians and collectors. I am not a big Beatles fan, I purchased this bass because it is feather light and it has a sound that can be used for jazz, as well as punk and garage rock. The retro look is really cool. Buy the deluxe model as it has fret markers along the neck, which the '62 and '63 models do not have making it easier to play in poorly lit rooms. All in all this is a unique instrument in line with the Vox Wyman Bass or the old Gibson EB1. If you are into the retro craze this is for you.

I recently began playing again after some fifteen years off and bought a jay turser jtb-2b/n short scale beatle bass...had it for a year and then bought the real thing. the hofner is a fine instrument, like going from a chevy to a bmw. sounds great through a vox t-60 amp. If you have the means, I highly recommend it.
