White Pearl, Maple Fretboard Darryl Jones

Darryl Jones has held down the groove for superstars such as Miles Davis, Sting, Madonna, The Rolling Stones, and Peter Gabriel. Darryl personally selected a pair of passive pickups designed by Aero Instrument for his signature bass. Traditional control setup includes 3 knobs: bridge volume, neck volume, and tone. The super-smooth, vintage-style ash body is enhanced with added curve to its contours and cutaways. A matching painted headstock adds even more vintage vibe.

Lakland luthiers now do their fret work using Plek technology to assure optimum playability. Plek is a CAD/CAM machine with scanning capability. It was developed to perform high-speed, highly accurate fret dressing, nut and bridge slotting and shaping, and engraving work. When used by an experienced luthier, the Plek machine produces necks with fretwork and action that equal the very best handwork and does it consistently.

Lakland Darryl Jones Signature Model 4-String Bass Features:

  • Matching painted headstock

Yes, this is a negative review for the Lakland Darryl Jones bass. But I wanted and expected it to be positive. I went to a guitar store to try this blue gem out. I figured my fingers would confirm all the stellar reviews I had read, and I liked the idea of supporting a local guitarmaker. However, I was shocked to feel such a clunky instrument. Two issues I immediately noticed: 1) the A-string buzzed behind the nut due to the shallow angle; 2) the frets were tiny, even compared to my Mexican J-bass which I was intending to replace. It is possible that the guys at the store failed to set it up properly, but my fingers did not feel like they were playing a $1000+ instrument. I am really shocked that I left that store more satisfied with my current MIM Jazz. Buyer beware.

As one who played a vintage ('66) Fender J-Bass for many years, I can honestly say that Lakland has "one-upped" that venerable company from the "left coast," with its Skyline Signature series. For a fraction of the cost, they are THE next best thing to their own U.S.-made basses (you'll be hard-pressed to tell the difference). I don't have the Darryl Jones model, but the similar Joe Osborn model, which is a bit closer to a true vintage Fender Jazz Bass. The fit & finish is impeccable. The Lindy Fralin pickups make this axe sound "smooth like buddah." It enables you to do things better than on the Fender (vintage OR new)! It is such a joy to play!! I never could see myself playing any bass but a Fender. But, thanks to Dan Lakin & company in Chicago, I can now play something other than a Fender-without the guilt! (and their service/support is second to none!) I promise you, if you've been partial to Fender, then Lakland is THE genuine alternative.

I picked this bass up at guitar center out of curiousity. Darryl was on a Miles Davis DVD I bought a while back and was impressed. This bass gets a classic, warm sound and plays like a dream. The only reason I did not buy this bass was because I'm often broke.

This bass is awesome for expierenced bass players. You can get unbelievable tone on this bass. I have been able to adjust to any style of music on this bass; you just need to play around with the knobs. They are very sensative so it can give you a huge range of sound. This bass is by far the best bass I've ever played and comes in very cool colors.

I just bought a Lakland Darryl Jones and I absolutely love mine (Candy Apple Red). The "fit and finish" is fantastic on a bass at this price. It comes with nice low action from the factory. The looks are killer with the bound neck, block inlays and matching painted headstock. Old school and classy. I like the string-through-body bridge and the Lakland strings (roundwound) although I'm dying to try it with some nice flats. The neck is a really nice shape and I love the finish on the back - plenty fast. The absolute best part is the incredible customer support from Lakland. I emailed them with a question about the controls and got an answer back within the hour explaining everything thoroughly with assurances that they would do everything possible to make sure I was happy with the bass. And I've heard nothing but praises about the service from other Lakland owners. This is a company that you can feel good about becuase they will stand behind their work.
