A new, affordable Lakland model! |
The Skyline 55-01 Electric Bass Guitar retains all the key features that have made Lakland the choice of professionals: ash body, flat-sawn maple neck, a choice of fretboard woods, Bartolini MK1 split-coil soapbar pickups, and 3-band buffered active preamp. Controls include cut/boost bass, mid, and treble; a panning-style pickup blend; and master volume (with pull-out switching to bypass EQ). 35" scale.
Lakland luthiers now do their fret work using Plek technology to assure optimum playability. Plek is a CAD/CAM machine with scanning capability. It was developed to perform high-speed, highly accurate fret dressing, nut and bridge slotting and shaping, and engraving work. When used by an experienced luthier, the Plek machine produces necks with fretwork and action that equal the very best handwork and does it consistently.

Lakland 55-01 is a hit!

I've had my new Lakland 55-01 for about 3 weeks now and I'm still blown away every time I pick it up! The action is super low, but doesn't have excessive fret buzz. The sound, with just a touch of compression on my Line 6 Low Down 175, is amazing. I have been playing a Peavey bass for years, and it was great for what I paid for it, but from now on I'm a Lakland player!
Pick up this bass! I don't think you'll do better for the money with anything else!

I played an L2500 for years - had to sell it, replaced it with this Lakland. It can't replicate the deep growl of the G&L, but the neck plays like silk, the intonation is better than the G&L, the controls are much easier to use and remember, it's got through the body strings and enough wood so that you can feel it your belly, but it's lighter and for me more managable than the G&L, which is a big, heavy ax, and the workmanship is impeccible. The one downside is that the pickups seem to be on the weak side so I'm missing the BIG G&L sound just a bit, but Pandora helps out. Not looking back because for me the smoothness and playability of this bass make it a keeper.

I traded in a Fender P-Bass for a Lakland 55-01 - mine is a 2001 model which was in mint condition.
Since aquiring this bass it has replaced my Spector Euro 5 as my go to bass. I only play the Lakland now. I can get any sound I want out of this thing - anything from really deep and warm to bright and shiny. The 3-band EQ is just awesome and the push/pull active/passive switch is a great feature. I love having the option to boost Mids, something that I could never do on my Spector. The only thing I was skeptical about was the 35" scale and broad neck - I gotta say that for me, this is much more comfortable to play than a standard 34" scale 5 string with 17mm spacing like my Spector. A lot of people hype up the low-B of the Lakland 5 strings; the hype is well deserved! My Lakland has the stock MK1 Bartolini pick ups (Korean made). I actually really like them, they're not as hot as the EMG's in my Spector, but thats ok. I don't think I will swap the MK1's on the Lakland, at least not anytime soon. I was always the type of guy who was a little weary of basses made in Asia, just because I've played a couple and compared them to US models and was never happy with the them. That went completely out the window with the Lakland. The craftsman ship is great, I doubt I would be able to tell any difference from a 55-01 and a US made Lakland. If you're looking to upgrade your 5 string and don't want to blow $2000 on a Warwick or a Musicman, you really gotta try this bass.

This Bass is so comfortable to play and the tone is fenominal. I highly recomend lakands, especcially this one, to any bassist. This bass has the tonal versatility of a P-bass and J-bass combined with the clarity you would expect form bartolini pickups and a swamp ash body. Amazing sustain thanks to the large body and through body stinging.

This is the 4th bass I've bought over the last 7 years that I've been playing and it is by far the best. I've had almost no issues with the bass since I got it about a year ago. I recommend this bass to anyone who's looking for a sturdy bass, with a decent amount of features.
