Few 4-string electric basses are as flat-out cool or have as much powerful tone as the MusicMan StingRay. Introduced in 1976, the StingRay was the first bass to feature active electronics and advancements such as a 6-bolt neck joint, contoured body, superior neck truss-rod system, and rock-solid bridge, all of which keep it on top of the pack. The StingRay is constructed with a select hardwood body, maple neck, Schaller BM tuners, 3-band active EQ, and MusicMan humbucking pickup.

Lot of money for a little

My old main bass used to be a 92 stingray and it was a great bass until the neck warped beyond to where it could be fixed. I still own but just for sentimental reasons. I decided to get a new stingray, and I have to say I am quite dissapointed. The numerous price hikes over the course of the last couple years are ridiculous, and the quality has gone down. The reason why they quit putting the laquer on the necks is mind boggling. The necks are also still flat sawn instead of quarter sawn. I can see the neck warping in a matter of years. For the amount of money you spend you should get a lot more features and better quality.

This bass has an amazing feel, superb slap tone, is more comfortable on my fingering hand then any bass (and I am mainly a Fender man) necks not quite as comfortable as a p bass. The reason I rated an overall of 4 is the sound isn't the most amazing, it's great for what it is but personally the sound is hard for me to fit somewhere. I recommend this bass to anyone who just wants a nice bass and can afford it however I personally prefer a Fender P bass but will still one day pick up a sting ray to sit besides my p bass.

I bought this bass a little over a year ago to replace my old Music Man copy. I know some people complain about the placement of the pickup, and since my first bass was a MM copy I may be a little biased, but I love the placement of the pickup.

The quality of this bass is top notch. I've played many basses costing around $5,000, and this one competes with all of them. The neck, and body is extremely solid. I love the active three band equalizer. It allows you to have control over your tone at a moments notice. I tend to overly boost my lows and highs, and leave the middle down. I've also gotten a smooth, jazzy sound out of this bass, as well as a nice round tone.

I am absolutely in love with this bass and will never sell it. Too bad I'm in Afghanistan for a year.. I thought about having it shipped here, but that would be too risky! Can't wait to play it again when I get back!

If you are willing to pay over a grand for a bass guitar buy this one now.

I bought my stingray bass in Jan 1977. It being a 1976 model imported into the uk in that year. I bought it in preference to a fender precision bass as the quiality of fender had diminished. The cost was 33% more than a fender then. The sound , feel & quaulity was superior and yes it is a heavy instrument. I would not sell it ever.

Send back to factory

I tried three stingrays in a music shop and all had poor build quality, worse than a lot of imports and far below price- level peers such as American Fender Jazz and Warwick Corvette. The neck- body connections had gaps large enough to slide a pick into. The frets were not trimmed sufficiently, all jutted sharply out the top of the neck and can scratch up your thumb when moving around on it. And all three basses had very bowed necks. If it were one out of three that had a bowed neck I would have blamed the shop, but with all three like that when no other bass in the shop had this problem implies that it originated from the factory. The only plus is the electronics, very hot and dynamic pickups. Maybe if it were set up properly it would be a $600 bass.
