Pretty Good Fretless

I received this bass for Christmas. Well, I played it at the store and got it, but no matter. This is my second bass and hands down my favorite, which really isn't that hard to say. The sound is pretty good and only a little buzz. The feel is very nice, and I have no problem going up and down the neck. Overall, I think this is the perfect fretless at least if it's your first one.

I've been playing professionally for 5 years now and got this bass three years ago just to fiddle around with the fretless capabilities. I also own a Fender P Bass Deluxe. It stays home so I can take this out. The neck on mine is just as smooth and slim as any jazz neck. I handed this to a bass player who played with Muddy Waters and he asked if he could play it after we opened for him. Great bass, and a price that can't beat. I've had no trouble with the electronics and the knobs are very easy to get a deep or plucky sound depending on what you want.

Can't be beat

I've played for over 35 yrs and have owned many basses. Custom built Wal fretless, Fender Tele bass, Precison,Guild B300 series, then finally and forever Jazz Bass fretted and fretless. Just got this one for a very good price and while I don't like the fret markers. The rest of this Jazz Bass counters that. Narrow neck makes awesome playability. Neck Joint is tight. Passive p/u's are good. The finish is extremely nice, could not find any flaws etc. Sound wise experiment and you will find your tone. I will eventually install a better bridge + send the strings thru the body as well. Active electronics and anew nut. You cannot beat it for the price !

One of My Favorite Bass Purchases -- Ever

It's not the greatest instrument ... but if you wanted that, you wouldn't even be considering anything at this price level. And sure, the MIM Fender Jazz may be a better entry-level instrument. The bridge and tuners on this instrument are cheap—you knew that already. The pickups are noisy—you read that as well. No surprises. Ebonol fingerboard? Okay, it's not anything like a ebony or pau ferro fingerboard. Aganthis body? Yeah, I think I would prefer a maple body. And least it has a maple neck ... and it's a one-piece neck at that. Fretlines? I too prefer my fretless basses without them. And with this bass, I wish that the fretlines were planed a little more smoothly.

But you know what? Despite all these "complaints", this bass sounds and plays great. More importantly, this bass begs to be played. Don't be ashamed of the Squier brand (also check out their Cool Vibe series basses ... absolutely great instruments). My only suggestions are to fix the action and straighten the neck as soon as possible. Highly recommended with flatwounds.

Trust me, you will love this instrument—whether its your back-up or your main stage ax.

(and by the way, the neck joint on this is way tighter than on some of the MIM's I've seen ... this is one solid instrument).

Great Fretless to Start With

This is a great bass for the bassist that wants to try a fretless without paying a lot of money. The reason I say this is it is easily upgradable, and has a good tone from the wood.

The electronics are the weakest link withthe bass, with the pot esentially being on/off buttons instead of smoothly blending tones/volumes. I suggest replacing with higher quality wiring and pots to start. Finish really is outstanding, as was the feel of the neck/action setup on mine. I will eventually replace the pups, and that is about all that needs to be done. For anyone lusting after a Jaco tribute that doesnt have the cash or someone wanting to explore the world of fretless playing, this is a great bargain that is easily upgradable.
