Designed by Ned Steinberger himself, the Steinberger Synapse XS-15FPA 5-String Bass Guitar features the unique U-channel graphite core in a rock maple neck and maple body. Combo head accommodates double-ball and single-ball strings while the unique direct-drive double ball bridge adds super-fast string changes and tune-it-once tuning stability.

While other guitar manufacturers have been resting on their laurels, Steinberger's been thinking. Witness the strap hook, recessed tool holder and output jack, fold-down leg rest, and phenolic fingerboard that's slick as butter and fast as lightning.

Low-impedance EMG USA bass pickup with internal low-impedance preamp and piezo bridge extends the range on both ends for earth-moving lows and phenomenal transients from slap-style playing.

Couldn't be more pleased

I was a little hesitant at first to buy a Steinberger as they were expensive and different than what I was used to. After seeing the affordable "B" models I decided to give it a try and buy a white Synapse. After receiving the bass I was not quite sure what to do with it. Yes, it was different, felt different and sounded different. But after getting used to it I was blown away. Outstanding quality with an array of sounds (EQ) that far surpasses any of my other 20+ basses. More treble and more bass than anything else that I have ever owned. The Piezo pickup really adds a twang that I have not experienced before although it makes the bass "squeak" when touched on the body as the entire bass becomes "active", only noticable when everything else is quiet and only if you move around (no big deal). Whether using your fingers or a pick, it will take a while to get used to as the feel is different lacking the part of the body where normally your wrist or thumb rests. Give it time and you will get past that. The neck feels great and "normal". I don't even miss the headstock, it is just the right hand that needs to get used to the new bass. I love it. I just bought an additional black "B" model as well as a fretless red "B" model as well. Don't be afraid of the "Bs" as they look brand crispy new to me. Certainly no wear or defects, only a "2nd" stamped under the leg rest that cannot be seen unless the leg rest is extended and you look right at it. This won't be my only bass that I use, but it will certainly be one of the few that I make a priority when it comes time to grab a bass or two for a live gig. Gig bag is nice and tight as well. If you don't mind something a little different than the norm, give this bass a try. I'm sure glad that I did. If you can't afford one of these then try a much cheaper Hohner Steinberger copy. I highly recommend those as well, above the also affordable but lessor quality Steinberger Spirit models.

Synapse 5 string bass

The only thing I really don't like about my new bass is, that you can not adjust the hight and intonation of individual strings. The reason for this is, that the saddle is one solid piece. Only course adjustment is possible.

One other thing is, that even though my nails are short, they make little marks on the body of the instrument when I pop strings. Naturally the nails will hit the body slightely when bringing the finger under the string before pulling up for popping. Other basses have a finish that can take this abuse, only after a long time will you see marks.

Other then that, I really love it. Sounds great, looks great, feels great.
