The Steinberger Synapse XS-15FPA Custom 5-String Bass gives you all the beauty of a gorgeous flamed maple top. Designed by Ned Steinberger himself, it features the unique U-channel graphite core in a rock maple neck and maple body. Combo head accommodates double-ball and single-ball strings while the unique Direct-Drive double-ball bridge adds super-fast string changes and tune-it-once tuning stability.

While other guitar manufacturers have been resting on their laurels, Steinberger's been thinking. Witness the strap hook, recessed tool holder and output jack, fold-down leg rest, and phenolic fingerboard that's slick as butter and fast as lightning.

Low-impedance EMG USA bass pickup with internal low-impedance preamp and piezo bridge extends the range on both ends for earth-moving lows and phenomenal transients from slap-style playing.

I bought this bass two years ago, and for the money it doesn't sound as good as some basses that are a fraction of the cost. It's well made sure enough and would probably last a lifetime. The battery compartment is too small. It is well balanced, but not as light as you would expect. It costs quite a bit for what you would be getting, and there are not the variations in tone that you would want for your main bass. I wouldn't recommend this to someone who only has one bass, because it just doesn't fill the bill.. Steinberger has a long way to go on this one. It's just slightly better than a one trick pony.

I've owned and gigged with the Steinberger Synapse Bass-5 for over a year. I have a shoulder problem and was looking for a quality lightweight bass. The lightweight part is good, and some .features are good - pickups, neck action, and the sound is decent. But as for quality, this bass is sub-par for this kind of money (my main bass is a German-made Warwick Corvette Standard 5 - no comparison for the same cash).

Please be aware that this bass is made in Korea. When you go over a grand you really hope you are getting a US made instrument, or at least one of US made quality. This bass unfortunately, doesn't fit the bill.

There are large rough spots in the finish of the body - inexcusable for an item of this price. But what really made me write this review is the battery compartment. The instructions for the bass talk about a pop up battery compartment. Fat chance. It's a cheapo plastic screw on cover over two jammed in 9vs. The compartment is rough and you have to pry the batteries out. Again, it's inexcusable for an "elite" bass. The only reason this bass wasn't returned was the weight issue. My shoulder has gotten better. If you don't need a light bass, you can get something just as good for half the money. Schecter, Lakland, G&L Tribute, and the Warwick's from China all are a much better value.

Easily the best bass I have ever owned. A work of beauty and superior craftsmanship, with sonic capabilities that have exceeded my expectations. My favorite setting is with the master volume 3/4 on, the bridge pickup off, the low EQ full tilt--an incredibly balanced and beefy sound. The body itself is so well balanced. With the 'kickstand' out I don't need a strap, and can comfortably and safely practice for hours. I love the progressive philosophy behind the Steinberger line, too. This is like trading your Chevrolet in for an Audi, or a BMW. It is worth every penny to a serious musician with high standards.
