The Tech 21 XXL Bass Edition Overdrive Stompbox lets you achieve a variety of results within the same setting depending on the manner and force of your pick attack while tweaking the Warp control. The Warp control works by manipulating the structure and balance of odd and even harmonics influencing their relativity to the dynamics of your instrument and your playing style. The Bass Edition features a level-compensated Tone control. At maximum it's flat. As you go towards the midpoint, it boosts the low end, compensating for the dropout typically associated with effects not specifically voiced for bass. Decreasing from the midpoint cuts highs without changing the output level. The Bass Edition is an excellent companion to the SansAmp Bass Driver DI, especially for those times when considerably more distortion is desired. Optional DC2 power supply or 9V battery (not included) operation.

Bring depth and soul to any amp with Tech 21's XXL. Order today -p wegauarantee you'll be blown away or your money back!

dynamic gain

I used a Sansamp bass driver for years and until I finally beat it up, it used to get a nice overdriven bass sound. I got away from using a overdrive in my last band and had got a better rig. My new band is a trio, so I wanted to again fatten up the tone. The XXL has been great. The Warp allows you to bring in distortion when you want by just varying your attack. I think this gives it much more dynamics than many over drives. Can't quite get that old 70s fuzz sound as it has more of a modern bite to the tone. I use mine with a Maxon Chorus quite a bit and it sounds great. I play a Jazz w/ passive pickups.

I just got this unit last week. I play bass in a top 40 Rock cover band and this is my first distortion overdrive pedal. All of my other pedals are boss. I play a FB-5 Modulus through an Ampeg Classic sitting on top of an Ampeg 6 x 10. It doesn't seem to play well with my compression pedals.

...mainly due to two reasons: the inherent Overdrive/Distortion sound quality that it has and the unique "Warp" function. Tech 21 describes it as "the XXL Bass Edition’s Warp control manipulates the structure and balance of odd and even harmonics and influences their relativity to the dynamics of your instrument and your playing style. Translation: you can achieve a variety of results, even within the same setting, depending on the manner and force of your pick attack."

Think of it as the Filter control on a synth pedal or auto-wah - the amount of distortion is dependent on how hard *you* play. Even simplier, YOU'RE playing to the amount of Overdrive/Distortion that enters your signal. Add to that a wide variety of tone ranging from your somewhat standard "grindy" Overdrive, to Fuzz, to "Just-on-the-range-of-breaking up" Industrial Distortion, and I can absolutely say that this is the most varied Overdrive/Distortion pedal in my rig (I have four) without sacrificing the great quality for it's quite reasonable price. I've played a good deal of mass-market as well as boutique Bass Overdrive and Distortion pedals and Tech 21's XXL Bass Edition ranks up there with "The Big Boy" at a fraction of the cost.

Big Time Fuzz

I bought the original tech 21 XXL made for guitar. It does not have the low end compensation feature this newer version does. The warp feature works excellent on bass especially with new DR highbeam strings. On a guitar the warp feature sounds wrong, on bass due to its wider harmonics structure it works great. This is a seriose high gain full out fuzz pedal. If you are looking for a little crunch or growl this isn't the pedal you want. If you want full out in your face distortion this is what you want. If you are playing through an Ampeg tube amp with a high gain pickup setup like a Rickenbacker this will be all you need. If you are playing through a solidstate transistor amp with dinky low gain Fender Precision like pickups you may wish to pair this pedal with the MXR Blowtortch, Boss Bass OD or the Tech 21 Sans Amp for a crunchy aggressive sound. This pedal has sound versitlity within it's un-versitile gain stage. Great for long sustained low notes and higher up the neck "leads". Not good for a litte "edge" it is WAY over the edge.

Now I have tried a variety a different distortion pedals and this one is unique in that the low end sustain is beautiful. Further, this is a great pedal for finger style and pickers a like. The first time I tried it, I thought I was in Pelican.
