Natural Spalted Maple

The Washburn CB14 Bass Guitar combines tonality with powerful electronics and killer craftsmanship. The bass is built on the uniquely carved CB design for a modern look and a comfortable approach. This model starts with a beautiful maple top that gives it stunning visual appeal. The electronics include Eden active pickups, plus three bands of EQ, and a volume control. It's natural finish completes the raw, earthy appeal of the Washburn CB14 bass. With lightning-fast feel and show-stopping beauty, this classic Washburn bass is ready for the main stage when you are!

It also uses the Buzz Feiten Tuning System, a tempered formula which uses a compensated nut and saddle to correct the inherent intonation problems of guitar tuning. The system that Buzz devised has been a godsend to musicians. Fans of the system include Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Liona Boyd and Andy Summers. The Buzz Feiten Tuning System is standard on all USA made Washburn basses and is featured on select imported models. Washburn is the only major bass manufacturer to incorporate the system as a standard feature on production bass guitars.

A resonant tone machine!

Experience w/product: I own it

Was very pleased when I took it out of the box... this thing is very resonant: it has a very tight feel to it and plays crisp and clean. You can feel the whole bass vibrate when you play it... very lively.

The fretboard radius is surprisingly flat, and although not what I'm used to, plays really well... clean and fast. The frets are polished and dressed, with no snags. The neck is a little on the shallow side, which should cater more to those who prefer modern necks. The tilt-back headstock was also a nice surprise.

The tuners are great: grovers, and the intonation was spot on except for the E. However, the saddles ride up over the screws that hold the bridge to the body - the screw heads stick up a bit - which means that all of the saddle isn't in direct contact with the bottom plate of the bridge. I'll re-bevel the screw holes and maybe use different screws and it'll be right as rain. (to fix the intonation of the E string, I'd have to pull the saddle back over top more of the raised screw head). Even with that, the bridge and tail piece seem of pretty good quality and look really sharp.

The action is very slightly higher than I like, but after I fix the bridge/screw problem, I'm sure I can take it down rather low... as the tension/string gauge I like, coupled with the great neck and fret job, should allow for awesome action.

The active electronics sound really good but there's a slight scratch on the treble pot (a shot of WD40 should clear that up). I've never heard of egnater pickups before (they are not branded as "Eden", as advertised), but these sounds pretty darn good. I repeatedly A/B'ed it against my yamaha which has active EMG Js and these sounded much better. The range is very broad with lots of headroom (even more than the EMGs). Also, it seems to me that there are two (not three) tone controls and a p/u blend and volume, not three EQs and a volume. Haven't really investigated it, though. Regardless, the setup offers a lot of great sounding tonal variety.

From the picture, you'd think the body has a steeper carve to it, but it doesn't. That's a play of the light. The top is fairly thin, but set very cleanly on the body, which at the center, is no thicker than a P bass. All the joints (fingerboard to neck, neck pocket, headstock laminate, etc.,) are very clean and well-made. The body is a three-piece laminate job, too, but you gotta look really close to tell. For this price range, it's a very well made guitar and sounds killer.

Although the pots are generic asian parts, the wiring job is very clean, with clean solder joints and solid connections. The battery box is a little on the chintzy side, but that's a small thing. If it breaks, it's easy and cheap to replace.

The gig bag is nicely padded and reinforced with seemingly good zippers (the one thing that tends to fail on gig bags!) and foam lining. The cable, though, is crap... the obligatory $5 cable that you'd never use unless you have to.

All in all, a super bass for the money.
